Britain admits Col Gaddafi could stay on

William Hague, the Foreign Secretary, admitted for the first time that Britain could agree to cut short the war before military action had driven Col Gaddafi into exile.

The government was forced to embrace a new stance after both France – whose Foreign Minister Alain Juppe was in London – and the Libya opposition publicly suggested that Col Gaddafi could yet remain in Libya.
